Disability History, Rights, and Inclusion

One in six people has a disability. They are already members of our organizations, our families, and the communities we serve. How can we promote inclusive and accessible programs and workplaces?

This interactive workshop will cover a brief history of disability, including the pivotal moments, figures, and major wins in the disability rights movement in the United States. We will examine how this history continues to shape contemporary perspectives on disability and influence societal attitudes and policies.

From that historical foundation, we will learn about the practical recommendations for fostering disability-inclusive environments. This workshop will cover best practices for nonprofits to increase accessibility in their workplaces, communications, and programs. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation of disability history as well as resources and tangible takeaways to bring back to their organizations.

This workshop will be facilitated by Ellysheva Bunge-Zeira from the Disability Policy Consortium (2019 Social Innovator). The Disability Policy Consortium’s mission is to ensure the voice of people with disabilities is heard on key issues, to support the health of our community through participatory research and expert policy analysis, and to empower grassroots disability leaders to transform their communities.
