KEYNOTE SPEAKERDan Lebowitz, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society
Dan Lebowitz has served as the Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society since October 6, 2008. He is the third executive director in Sport in Society’s 35 year history. Dan’s tenure has seen a wide spectrum of work, from a partnership with the NFL around sexual harassment prevention to a solidified position as one of the most sought-after resources for capacity-building and leadership education to sport and social change organizations. During his time the Center has done primary violence prevention work with Major League Baseball, the military, the Boston Police Department and other community engagement entities involved in positive youth development and normative culture change. He has been referenced in print, television and radio media across the country including Newsweek, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and ESPN in discussions about the role of sports in promoting inclusion and social responsibility.
Dan possesses an extensive background in the design, development, and implementation of educational and employment programs aimed at opening opportunities for urban youth and the many underserved and diverse populations throughout the country. In his 35 year career, he has worked in and/or managed a myriad of programs toward this end, including Brandeis University’s Transitional Year Program, the Waltham Group, Upward Bound, the City of Boston Employment and Economic Policy Administration, the Boston Private Industry Council’s Boston Compact Initiative and Summer Jobs Program, and the Department of Transitional Assistance’s Housing and Housing Services Division for the Homeless.

Using wrestling as a tool and a motivator, Boston Youth Wrestling, teaches youth to successfully overcome socio-economic challenges that lead to educational gaps, poor health and negative community relationships, imparting skills such as self-reliance, discipline and commitment to others that apply both on and off the mat, in school, and beyond.

ABOUT THE SPRING SOCIAL ISSUE TALK SERIES
The Social Innovation Forum (SIF) is excited to announce the expansion of our annual March Social Issue Talk Series to all of spring. With the optimistic energy necessary to live and work in Boston, we are ushering in the start of spring early with our first event on February 21. The newly renamed Spring Social Issue Talk Series is still made up of eight free, educational events across the city but now takes place throughout the months of February to April. At each event, funders and community leaders can hear from leading experts and our 2019 Social Innovators about the latest trends, best practices, and exciting innovations across a variety of fields.
