Welcome to our eighth installment of the Putting the “Social” in Social Innovation Summer Series! With a portfolio of 99 organizations and social businesses, the Social Innovation Forum wants to help keep our community informed, active, and social. Each week we will share events being hosted by our past Innovators and Entrepreneurs. Be sure to get out there and support our inspiring Boston nonprofit community!

1. Check out the Neighborhood with Haley House, 2003 Innovator
Roxbury Loop
August 8, 4 pm - 7 pm | Haley House Bakery Cafe, 12 Dade St, Roxbury, MA 02119

Join in on an interactive tour celebrating the Roxbury community’s accomplishment of closing the “food loop,” culminating in a party with pizza and beer! Dudley Dough, CERO Cooperative, and Haley House’s Thornton Street Farm offer a new paradigm for how a community working together can close the food loop, while also creating jobs, stimulating the local economy, and promoting social justice.


2. Play with Robots with KinderLab, 2016 Impact Entrepreneur
KinderLab Robotics Summer Workshop
August 9, 9 am - 4 pm | Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development at Tufts University, 105 College Ave., Medford, MA 02155

This one-day training workshop by the Tufts University DevTech Research Group provides hands-on training and an in-depth understanding of how to use KIBO robotics in a developmentally appropriate way with young children. Participants will learn teaching pedagogy and explore strategies for integrating the KIBO teaching materials with traditional early childhood content. This workshop is perfect for educators, program coordinators, and specialists who work with young children ages four to seven. No prior tech experience required. All participants will leave with a fully developed robotics curriculum, ready to implement in the fall!


3. Party after the Party with Company One Theatre, 2015 Innovator & The Theatre Offensive, 2008 Innovator
Gender Play After Party
August 10, 7:30 pm | Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA, 527 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02116

Keep the party going with C1! Join the cast and crew after the performance to dance, eat, laugh, play, and have your expectations challenged with members of The Theatre Offensive family, the cast of The T Party, and your fellow show attendees. Burlesque sensations Madge of Honor and McKersin Previlus and guest DJ Manu will get your body moving and throw all gender norms to the wind. The bar will be open, and guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite 90s prom attire. Remember: gender "rules" do not apply.


4. Find Your Inner Scientist with the Science Club Girls, 2012 Innovator
Teen STEM Showcase
August 11, 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm | Simmons College, 300 Fenway, Linda K. Paresky Conference Center, Boston, MA 02115

Join the Science Club for Girls summer students as they present their projects at Simmons College! Audience members will learn about Science Club for Girls, participate in live demos, and explore cutting edge science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Science Club for Girls fosters excitement, confidence and literacy in STEM for girls, particularly from underrepresented communities, by providing free, experiential programs and by maximizing meaningful interactions with women mentors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.


5. Grab Your Popcorn with Press Pass TV, 2015 Innovator
Dudley After Dark Movie Night
August 11, 7 pm - 10 pm |  50 Dudley St, Roxbury, Massachusetts 02119

Join Press Pass TV for a family friendly evening! This movie night on the Dudley Square Triangle, Judge Gourdin Park (intersection of Dudley, Shawmut, Washington and Malcolm X) will feature snacks, information on community resources, and a chance to meet new people! The movie “Creed” will start at 8 pm! If you'd like to bring a community activity or table for your organization contact Dr. Cara Berg Powers at cara@presspasstv.org. Press Pass TV is an award-winning organization that uses the power of media arts to provide meaningful employment and education for youth living in low-income neighborhoods.


6. Fill the Bus with Catie’s Closet, 2015 Innovator

August 12, 10 am - 2 pm | Rose Kennedy Greenway, near Rowes Wharf, Boston, MA 02111

Catie’s Closet’s mission is to help kids ages four to nineteen by giving them the clothing and basics they need to confidently walk through their school doors every day. These important basics help children secure a brighter future by removing the burden of fitting in and clearing a path to focus on their education. Currently in partnership with thirty-four schools and with plans to expand into Boston, Catie’s Closet hopes to get communities and businesses to open up their hearts, drawers, and closets to help kids feel loved, confident and worthy. You can donate any lightly-used clothing, new socks, new undergarments, and full sized toiletries at the Rose Kennedy Greenway. You can also make online contributions.


7. Eat in Peace with Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, 2016 Innovator  
Peace B-Que
August 13, 12 pm - 4 pm | 15 Christopher Street, Dorchester, MA 02122

Join the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute for an afternoon full of fun activities, food, and community healing. The day will feature performances by local artists, arts and crafts, face painting, ice cream, a photo booth and more! The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute serves as a center of healing, teaching and learning for families and communities dealing with murder, trauma, grief and loss.

About the Author

Alexandra Williams worked with SIF during the Summer of 2016 as a Social Innovator Accelerator Summer Program Intern through the Yale Alumni Community Service Fellowship. She is​ currently​ a senior at Yale University studying Political Science with a focus on urban development and public policy​.​
